So, I've heard from a number of "tech pundits" that Apple cutting the price of the iPhone 3G to $99 allows for a new group of consumers to buy the phone who could not previously afford it.
That doesn't make any sense to me. I have an iphone 3G, and the initial cost ($299) wasn't that horrible. What is horrible is what AT&T charges per month. Before taxes, I'm shelling out $75. After taxes it is over $90 (thanks Cook County!).
How many people cannot afford to shell out $199 for a phone but can afford a $90 a month phone bill? Not very many I bet.
Hell, I paid $599 for my original iPhone. What was I thinking?

You make a valid point.
One of my favorite podcasts these days it The Cell Phone Junkies. They discussed the 2 or 3 year ownership cost for an iPhone v Palm Pre v T-mobile smart phone. The iPhone was significantly higher than either of the other two options.
AT&T is definitely reaming iPhone owners.
Wonder if they'll be able to keep that up if/when Verizon gets their hands on a iPhone. I'm thinking NOT!
I have to have Verizon service because AT&T has no signal where I live. I'm not even sure I'd want an iPhone if/when Verizon gets one. I'm addicted to my smartphone. Until the Apple people get some things figured out I'll stick with my phone.
